The origin of the name of the area called 'The Longman' is unclear.
At one time it was a place of execution and the name could be a grim reference to the victim after being hung. Another suggestion relates to the claim of the discovery of a human skeleton of a man said to be thirty feet tall at nearby Petty.
The most likely explanation is that the name is derived from the Gaelic language, 'long' being one name for a ship and 'min' meaning flat, the whole word meaning 'ship-flat', a place where ships could beach.
